Description

Reframing Masculinity in the Workplace

This module explores how evolving concepts of masculinity can foster a more inclusive and supportive workplace, where men can be their authentic selves. In doing so, it provides practical steps for both men and women to positively reframe masculinity and create a space where vulnerability, empathy, and emotional intelligence are valued.

The Shift in Societal Expectations

Societal expectations of masculinity are undergoing a significant shift. Traditional ideals that prioritise stoicism, dominance, and emotional suppression are being challenged, giving way to a more inclusive approach that encourages vulnerability, empathy, and emotional intelligence. This shift is particularly important as workplaces evolve in response to new dynamics, including the rise of AI. While technology reshapes roles and workflows, it also brings to light new patterns of toxic masculinity, particularly among younger men who perceive women as career threats. Unfortunately, these outdated mindsets can undermine progress, creating an environment where equality is still elusive.

The Mental Health Struggle

More men are opening up about mental health struggles, seeking help at rates similar to women. Yet, in the workplace, barriers persist, as emotional expression and seeking support are still seen as weaknesses. Traditional masculine ideals often fail to support men’s emotional and caregiving roles, adding to the pressure.

The Evolving Role of Men at Home

As men take on more parenting and caregiving responsibilities, societal expectations must adjust to support them. While paternity leave and workplace flexibility are on the rise, many men still face challenges due to a lack of support and role models. Issues like paternal postpartum depression remain largely unaddressed.

Creating a Supportive and Inclusive Environment

By confronting the negative impacts of patriarchal structures—on both men and women—we can create a more supportive and inclusive work environment. This shift is not just about helping men become their full selves; it’s about fostering a healthier, more equitable workplace for everyone. Addressing these issues is crucial for promoting gender equality, supporting mental health, and ensuring a balanced, empathetic workplace culture.
