Description
One in eight couples experience fertility issues, yet fertility struggles are often invisible in the workplace. Under the surface couples are dealing with a rollercoaster of emotions that can impact how they show up in the workplace. Normalising the topic can help us create workplace cultures where we can better support employees going through treatment.
Fertility treatment is often a huge investment of time, energy, finances and emotion. It can feel in itself like a part-time job so it’s important that it feels compatible with someone’s work, rather than in conflict with it.
Many line managers haven’t experienced fertility treatment themselves so are unaware of the complexities of the journey and how specifically to provide meaningful support. Stigma and shame surrounding infertility contribute to a wall of silence around the topic. Feeling unsupported through fertility treatment can be a reason for staff turnover. 38% of employees undergoing fertility treatment considered leaving their jobs.
If you are someone who believes in inclusion, then this life event (usually undesired by the person going through it) is an opportunity to help that colleague feel included, supported and cared for.
The aim of this module is to up-skill line managers to be able to confidently manage and support their direct reports through fertility treatment. It is also for any employee who wants to better understand how to support their colleagues through their fertility journey.
